Hello and welcome to the new and improved TheOldSilverOak. If you have been following me for awhile you know that there has been a lot of ups and downs. As well as a lot of time off. If you are just not following me, aren't you lucky you missed all the mess! In my personally life I have been having a hard time finding my passion. So I have to dabble in everything and run around like a crazed chicken until, BAM! I got it. I want to do more than one thing. I am a multitasker. I can't explain it, but I am more comfortable when I am spread thin. Chaos. I thrive in the chaos. At the same time I have a growing interest in getting away from the hustle and bustle of so called “convenient” living. That growing interest is what has brought TheOldSilverOak to this new place.
As you can see by the tag-line, A
Journey to Self-Sufficiency and Living Simply, is this new direction.
We live in a world where we can just pop a pill or hop in a car and
head to the nearest fast food joint. This “convince” isn't all
it's cracked up to be. It amazes me how of those younger than me have
no concept of how to do simple sewing repairs, grow from a seed, even
laundry! I wasn't born in a time of living off the land but I am glad
to be living in a time where more and more people are going back to
simple living. Now I understand it really isn't that simple but that
is not the point of simple living. Simple living's purpose is to
simplify one's lifestyle. Be it minimizing your possessions (commonly
known as minimalism), living off the grid, being more frugal, etc.
There is no one true definition. It means something different to
everyone, but the ultimate purpose as stated above is the simplify
your lifestyle. That is not a simple process by any means, especially
when you are used to a certain lifestyle. I am not against modern
technology. I have no desire at this point to leave my washing
machine behind, or my indoor plumbing. As a matter of fact, I think
there is a great way to merge technology and self-sufficiency. I do
however feel we've become too dependent on modern convinces. Would it
really be so bad to learn to do things on your own. Make your own
furniture. Grow your own food. Lower your electricity bills because
you are using the solar oven instead. There is no harm in that right?
Right!
So, I do hope you join me on my journey
into living simply. I also hope you will be able to take something
away from my mistakes and my accomplishments. I welcome those who are
on their journey, those who think I am mad, as well as those that are
pros in this lifestyle to chime in. I will try my best to make this
not only an education journey, but a fun one for adults & kids!
I'd love hear how you've begun to
incorporate simple living into your current lifestyle, so leave a
comment below!
